Oromia at a Glance

The Oromia National Regional State is one of the regional states in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Except for the Tigrai Regional State, the Oromia Regional State shares borders with all of Ethiopia’s regional states. The region also shares international boundary lines with Sudan (66km) and Kenya (521km) in the West and in the South respectively. Oromia is one of the most populous regional states and is located in the very heart of the country. The capital city of the Region is Finfinne (Addis Ababa), which is also the capital city of Ethiopia.

Oromia has fertile soil, and is centrally located within Ethiopia allowing for a diverse agro-ecology that makes it ideal for all investment sectors. Oromia is home to most of resources found in Ethiopia. This includes coffee, poultry, beehives and livestocks.

Finfinne (Addis Ababa) is the capital city of Ethiopia and also that of Oromia Region State. The city is an important regional and international transport hub. The road network radiates from Finfinne to all Regions linking it with important cities, towns, and other economically active centers of the country. International highways also link Finfinne and other cities, towns and other regional states with neighboring countries such as Kenya, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.

Ethiopia in general and Oromia region in particular have large investment potentials for agricultural development. In the Oromia Region, investment in the agriculture sector is attractive and profitable for various diverse sub-sectors ranging from food products, industrial raw materials to bio-fuel. The region has fertile soils and diverse agro-ecology that makes it ideal for agriculture. Crop production, livestock and forestry account for 49%, 14% and 4% within the sector respectively. The major crops grown in the region are coffee, cereals, oilseeds, pulses, vegetables and fruits. Over 60% of Ethiopian’s top export earner commodity coffee comes from Oromia Region. About 36% of livestock in Ethiopia, 37% of the poultry and 50% of the beehives are found in the Oromia.

 

The region is the leading investment destination in the country and strongly positioned in terms of infrastructure. In 2014/15, the agricultural sector of the region accounted for 53 % of the Regional Gross Domestic Products and provides over 85% of the employment and is a major earner of foreign currency for the nation. The country so far has managed to have nine tangible heritages and three intangible heritages recorded to UNESCO (as world heritage). Ethiopia enjoys diversified culture with authenticity, varied land forms (landscape scenery), unique and diversified fauna and flora, historical and ancient monuments, favorable climate and above all hospitable people.
